    People around the Czechia donated 624 tonnes of non-perishable products for the needy on Saturday within the bi-annual National Food Collection, the organizers announced on Sunday. It is the best result since the tradition was launched in 2013.

    Some 2,000 shops and supermarket chains have joined the autumn collection to help seniors, single mothers, the handicapped, disadvantages families and children in care homes. People can continue to donate products bought online until November 21.

    The opposition ANO party would win elections to the lower house of parliament if they were held today, according to an October poll conducted by the Kantar agency for Czech Television.

    The results suggest ANO would get 33 percent of the vote, far ahead of the Together bloc consisting of the Civic Democrats, the Christian Democrats and TOP 09, who would place second with 21.5 percent of the vote.

    The anti-EU Freedom and Direct Democracy Party, along with the Pirate Party, would both finish in the third place, each receiving the backing of 10.5 percent of voters.

    Czech tennis players failed to reach the finals of the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup in Seville, Spain, suffering a 2-1 defeat by Canada.

    In the first semifinal match on Saturday, Barbora Krejčíková put the Czechs ahead with a 6-2, 6-1 singles win over 18-year-old Canadian Marina Stakusic.

    However, Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, having arrived late from the WTA Finals in Cancun, was stunned by the 21-year-old Fernandez who claimed a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win.

    In the decisive doubles match, Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková lost to Gabriela Dabrowski and Leylah Fernandez.

    Tributes have been pouring in for former foreign minister, senator and honorary chairman of TOP 09 party Karel Schwarzenberg, who died in Vienna on Sunday at the age of 85.

    Prime Minister Petr Fiala described Mr. Schwarzenberg as an important personality of the Czech exile and Czech politics of the last decades, and said he was honoured to sit with him in the Government.

    According to Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský, Mr. Schwarzenberg was one of the greatest political figures of our time and his passing is an irreplaceable loss for the whole society.

    Former TOP 09 chairman and co-founder Miroslav Kalousek, said the party’s honorary chairman was one of the most important and kindest people in his life, adding that Czechia should be forever grateful to him for all he selflessly did for the country.

    According to the current head of TOP 09, Markéta Pekarová Adamová, said Mr Schwarzenberg has had a profound influence on her life and left a legacy that is immortal and has to be carried on.

    Former foreign minister, MP, senator and honorary chairman of TOP 09 party Karel Schwarzenberg has died at the age of 85 after a long illness. The one-time presidential candidate, noted for his pro-European views, had been hospitalised in Vienna for the past few days.

    Mr Schwarzenberg, who had both Czech and Swiss citizenships, was born in Prague in 1937 into a noble family, which was forced to flee the country after the communist coup in 1948, settling in Vienna.

    In the 1980s, Mr Schwarzenberg served as president of International Helsinki Federation for Human right, negotiating the question of human rights in former USSR, Bulgaria, Kosovo, and in Czechoslovakia.  He also co-founded the Czechoslovak documentary centre supporting the Czechoslovak exile and dissent, which was seated in his family mansion in Bavaria.

    After his return to Czechoslovakia in 1989 Mr. Schwarzenberg served as the chancellor to president Václav Havel until his abdication in 1992. He went on to be elected as Senator from 2004 to 2010 and to serve as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic from 2007 to 2009 and again from 2010 to 2013.

    In 2009, Karel Schwarzenberg, together with Miroslav Kalousek, founded the TOP 09 party, and in 2010 he was elected an MP. In 2013 and qualified for the second round of the presidential elections, finishing as runner-up against Miloš Zeman.

    The average time spent by Czechs in retirement has increased by about three years and five months over the past 20 years. It now stands at nearly 24 years and seven months, according to an annual study by the Czech Social Security Administration released on Saturday.

    The main reason is that Czechs are living longer. Last year, the average retirement pension was paid for nearly 19 and four months to men and 28 years and seven months to women.

    Under the government plans, the retirement age could by raised by around a month a year in the future. Currently, it rises on average by two months each year for men and four months for women.

    A new production of Leoš Janáček’s opera Jenůfa, known in Czech as Její pastorkyňa, is due to premiere in Chicago’s Lyric Opera on Sunday. The new staging will be conducted by Jakub Hrůša, the chief conductor of the Bamberg Symphony, and feature Czech tenor Pavel Černoch in one of the lead roles.

    The opera, which premiered in Brno in 1904, was the work that first drew serious attention to Janáček as a composer. It was first staged in the United States 99 years ago at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

    The event will be accompanied by an exhibition presenting composer Leoš Janáček in the foyer of the theatre. It will open next week in the presence of Czech Consul General Jakub Utěšený.

    TOP 09 party chairwoman Markéta Pekarová Adamová was re-elected party leader at the party’s election conference in Prague on Saturday.

    Mrs. Pekarová Adamová, who has led the party since 2019 and ran for the top post unchallenged, was supported by 142 delegates out of 177. Vlastimil Válek, who serves as Minister of Health in Petr Fiala’s government, was elected first deputy chairman.

    Mrs. Pekarová Adamová, who is the speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, will lead TOP 09 in 2025 parliamentary elections. Polls suggest it has the support of around 5.5 percent voters.

    Czechs are marking International Veterans Day on Saturday, which is celebrated internationally on November 11, the anniversary of the end of World War I.

    A traditional ceremony took place at the national memorial on Prague’s Vítkov Hill on Saturday morning. The event was attended by Defence Minister Jana Černochová, top military brass and other public figures.

    A concert organised by the NGO Post Bellum and Czech Radio in honour of military veterans will take place at Prague’s St. Vitus Cathedral in the evening. Commemorations are also being held in other Bohemian and Moravian cities.
