Minister: Working quarantine only for health or social care staff

The Czech minister of health, Vlastimil Válek, says a government scheme under which key workers who test positive for Covid-19 would be allowed to remain on the job will only apply to healthcare and social service staff. The idea of so-called working quarantine is to prevent a breakdown in essential services if the Omicron variant causes a huge surge in Covid infections.

Mr. Válek said hygiene officials would determine conditions for the scheme. He said if they permitted Covid-positive staff to go to work there would have to be zero risk the latter could infect others; they must not have symptoms or other difficulties.

Another minister had earlier said working quarantine could apply to professions such as power generation or delivery of essential goods.
