Interior Minister Hamáček resigns as Social Democrat leader

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Jan Hamáček, announced his resignation as head of the Social Democratic Party at a meeting of the party leadership on Monday.

Mr. Hamáček resigned in response to the party’s crushing defeat in October’s general elections when it failed to win seats in the lower house for the first time ever in the country’s modern history.

Hamáček led the Social Democratic Party since February 2018. An election conference is expected before the end of the year.

Labour and Social Affairs Minister Jana Maláčová announced her intention to run for the top party post.
