Election winner Petr Fiala (Spolu): once President Zeman’s health improves, I will seek a meeting

Petr Fiala, head of the three-party Spolu coalition that won the general elections by a razor-thin margin, has said he will wait until President Miloš Zeman’s health improves to seek a meeting.

As head of state, it falls upon President Zeman to ask someone to try to form a new governing coalition. On Sunday, the day after the elections, he was rushed to hospital by ambulance, but is now reportedly in stable condition.

The Spolu coalition captured 27.79 percent of the vote, just 0.67 percentage points more than Prime Minister Andrej Babiš’s ANO party.

Previously, President Zeman had said he would ask the leader of the party that won the most votes – in this case, Mr Babiš – to try to form a government.

Spolu, is comprised of the Civic Democrats, of which Mr Fiala is chairman, plus the Christian Democrats and the Top 09 party. Together with and second opposition coalition, comprised of the Pirates and Mayors, they won a majority of 108 seats in the 200-member lower house of Parliament.
