Czechs still struggling with English language skills
Czechs have placed fifth worst in Europe as regards English language skills, according to the 2021 English Proficiency Index. Only France, Italy, and Spain have lower levels of English than the Czech Republic. In a worldwide comparison, the Czech Republic fell from 19th to 27th place, in what is the steepest drop registered across Europe this year.
Although there has been some natural progress in foreign language skills due to freedom of travel and opportunities to study abroad, Czechs over the age of 40 generally speak few foreign languages. According to the Czech Statistics Office about half of Czechs can communicate in English, however, only a quarter have more than a basic knowledge of the language. Almost a third of the population speaks no foreign language at all.
