Czechs mark 76th anniversary of end of World War II in Europe
Events commemorating the 76th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe are being held around the Czech Republic on Saturday.
President Miloš Zeman marked the event with a traditional wreath-laying ceremony at the National Monument at Prague’s Vítkov Hill, paying tribute those who fell during the war.
Among the state officials and other senior dignitaries in attendance were Senate chairman Miloš Vystrčil and Prague Mayor Zdeněk Hřib, along with military figures such as Defense Minister Lubomír Metnar and Chief of General Staff Aleš Opata and Cardinal Dominik Duka.
Celebrations are also underway in Pilsen, commemorating the city liberation of the West Bohemian city by American forces in May 1945. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, most of the events had to be moved online.
