Czech Republic calling for Navalny’s immediate release

The Czech Republic has joined calls demanding the immediate release of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who was sentenced to 3.5 years in jail by a Moscow court on Tuesday.

Czech Foreign Minister Tomas Petříček said Navalny has been sentenced in a show trial aimed at silencing the opposition. He said the EU should seriously consider levelling sanctions against Russia.

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell also demanded Navalny be released, tweeting that “the sentencing of Alexei Navalny runs counter to Russia’s international commitments on rule of law and fundamental freedoms.”
